Kampala: National Road Safety Week 14th – 20th December 2015

kampala road safetyThe Ministry of Works and Transport through the National Road Safety Council organized the Road Safety Week under the theme, “Share the Road Save Lives”. This was held during the 14th to the 20th of December 2015 with the aim of raising general awareness of the Road Safety Situation and to also rally stakeholders to take action individually and collectively to improve the road safety situation in Uganda. This was attended and supported by the Ministry of Works and Transport, other government agencies, different UN-agencies including UN-Habitat, civil society organizations and the private sector. The activities held included a marching procession, stakeholders’ workshop, sensitization campaigns, zebra crossing painting, radio and television talkshows among others.

TRL delivers workshop on Automated Fare Collections systems in Addis Ababa

Addis AbabaIn support to the Transport Programmes Management Office, TRL has delivered a stakeholder workshop to increase local knowledge and awareness of Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system requirements for a BRT system. The workshop was held on March 1st, 2016 at Hotel Intercontinental and facilitated by TRL and the TPMO.
The workshop included opening remarks from Dr. Solomon Kidane, General Manager of the TPM, a presentation of AFC technologies, main challenges, international experiences and recommendations from Yorgos Voukas, Senior Consultant of TRL, and presentations from the Ethiopian Railway Corporations, KIFIYA and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia.

Credit Facility Agreement for the construction of the B2 BRT corridor is signed in Addis Ababa

On April 16th, 2015 (gc), in the presence of H.E. Brigitte Collet, Ambassador of France to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and to the African Union, the Ethiopian State Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Ato Ahmed Side, signed a Credit Facility Agreement of Euros 50 million with Mr Christian Yoka, the French Agency for Development (AFD) Regional Manager in Addis Ababa.

SUSTRAN Study Tour to Istanbul, Turkey 2015

As part of the GEF SUSTRAN project, a 3-day study tour to Istanbul/Turkey was jointly conducted by UN-HABITAT and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH in March 2015. The study tour was joined by 11 representatives from various institutions and ministries of the three SUSTRAN partner cities Kampala (Uganda), Nairobi (Kenya) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia). The study tour was designed to focus on the planning and design, institutional aspects and regulation and operation of the Istanbul BRT Metrobüs. However, the study tour also intended to raise awareness for sustainable transport and experience the entire range of modes of public transport as well as non-motorized transport in Istanbul.

TRL delivers a workshop in Addis Ababa: “Integration of Non-Motorised Transport to BRT systems”

As part of the ongoing technical support of TRL to the city of Addis Ababa, TRL and UN HABITAT have agreed to organise and deliver a 1-day workshop in Addis Ababa with a focus on Non-motorised transport and integration into BRT design. The workshop is hosted by the Transportation Program Management Office and the Addis Ababa Road and Transport Bureau and it will take place on March 11th in Addis Ababa.
