Youth Art Exhibition at ASTF Conference

Japheth Nyamosi

Sustainable Transport Africa (STA) participated in the Africa Ministerial Conference at UNEP headquarters in Nairobi from 28th to 30th October 2014. STA assisted Africa Sustainable Transport Forum (ASTF) organise an art exhibition which showcased art works focusing on urban transport by children from Kibera slums in Nairobi.

The aim of the exhibition was to sensitize African transport ministers and transport policy makers to the impacts of urban transport on economically disadvantaged communities. There is need for accessibility to urban transport in Africa of all strata of society, and in particular to disadvantaged groups, in economically and environmentally sustainable formats to society in the long term.

The exhibition was done in conjunction with Uweza Art Gallery. The exhibition doubled up as a Youth Art Competition and the theme was "My Transport - My reality - My vision". Sylvester Oyoo and Victor Otieno were joint winners in the 7 to 13 years category. Japhet Nyamosi won the 14 to 16 years category.

It was an excellent awareness raising and advocacy session for the youth showcasing sustainable transport. We look forward to being involved in other advocacy and awareness raising sessions in and out of Africa.
