3-day Trainings for SUSTRAN on “Sustainable Urban Transport” successfully conducted in Addis Ababa, Kampala and Nairobi

Jointly organized by UN-HABITAT and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ-SUTP) a 3-day training on „Sustainable Urban Transport" was successfully conducted in each of the capital cities of Ethiopia, Nairobi and Uganda. The trainings were part of the UN-HABITAT "Promoting Sustainable Transport Solutions for East African Cities" (GEF SUSTRAN) Project and took place in Nairobi from November 3-5, in Kampala from November 6-8 and in Addis Ababa from November 10-12. n Nairobi and Kampala, ITDP participated in the training, presenting on BRT service planning and infrastructure design as well as parking policy

In total 76 participants attended the training sessions. The participants included representatives from various governmental ministries and departments, international organizations and public transport providers respectively from the three cities. In addition the trainings were accompanied by ITDP and UN-HABITAT staff to further benefit the outcome and learning experience.

To complement the SUSTRAN cities' work on BRT demonstration corridors, the trainings focused on the role of urban transport towards creating equitable and livable cities, the links between transport and urban development, institutional development, transport policies, public and informal transport as well as non-motorized transport.

While Mr. Carlosfelipe Pardo and Dr. Jürgen Perschon were leading the courses on behalf of GIZ, Walter Hook, Annie Weinstock and Chris Kost (all ITDP) supported the trainings in Nairobi and Kampala by providing presentations on the BRT and TOD Standards, BRT Business Planning and Industry Transition and Parking Management.
