Detailed design consultant appointed for Nairobi BRT Line 1

With the support from World bank, Integrated Transport Planning Ltd. (ITP) was hired to prepare infrastructure designs and a business plan for Line 1 of the bus rapid transit (BRT) system in Nairobi, running on Mombasa Rd and Waiyaki Way. ITP has submitted an inception report and is conducting frequency counts, transfer surveys, origin-destination surveys, and boarding-alighting surveys to update the Line 1 service plan prepared by the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) in 2014. Based the passenger demand data, ITP will create conceptual designs for Lot 2, the central section of Line 1 running from Likoni Rd to James Gichuru Rd. An important task is the detailing of the alignment of BRT in Nairobi CBD, where the original service plan proposed a BRT loop along Haile Selassie Avenue, Moi Avenue and University Way. Construction will soon commence on the outer sections of Line 1 under the auspices of the Kenya National Highways Authority.
