TRL delivers workshop on Automated Fare Collections systems in Addis Ababa

Addis AbabaThe workshop included opening remarks from Dr. Solomon Kidane, General Manager of the TPM, a presentation of AFC technologies, main challenges, international experiences and recommendations from Yorgos Voukas, Senior Consultant of TRL, and presentations from the Ethiopian Railway Corporations, KIFIYA and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. The workshop was attended by representatives of the local agencies of AACRA, AARTB, TPMO, Anbessa, ERC, as well as the international organisations C40 and AFD. The participants of the workshop have discussed in detail the potential opportunities and constraints towards the implementation of an AFC system in Addis Ababa, particularly with regards to the integration with the LRT and other transport modes. The workshop concluded with a site visit to the Operational Control Centre of the LRT system, where ERC officials have presented an overview of the work in the Operational Control Centre, as well as the ITS solutions to monitor and supervise the day-to-day LRT service. The ERC technical team has also presented the LRT ticketing system, as well as the requirements for back office support and their AFC related technologies (i.e. contactless cards, validators, vending machines, etc).
