Credit Facility Agreement for the construction of the B2 BRT corridor is signed in Addis Ababa

On April 16th, 2015 (gc), in the presence of H.E. Brigitte Collet, Ambassador of France to the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia and to the African Union, the Ethiopian State Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Ato Ahmed Side, signed a Credit Facility Agreement of Euros 50 million with Mr Christian Yoka, the French Agency for Development (AFD) Regional Manager in Addis Ababa.

This AFD concessional financing aims at supporting the Addis Ababa City Government (AACG) in the construction and launching of operation of the first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) pilot lane; seven lanes should be developed by 2030, as per the master plan of Addis Ababa and its Oromia surrounding zone. Ethiopia could be the first Eastern African country implementing this public transport system.

Indeed, Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) is one of the major components of the sustainable and integrated mass transport system promoted by AACG. BRT is a high-quality-bus-based transit system that delivers fast, safe, comfortable and cost-effective transport services to passengers, thanks to the provision of dedicated lanes and buses.

Complementary to the Light Railway Transit (LRT), on the verge to be commissioned, and crossing it in two distinct locations, this 16 km BRT pilot lane will run from Wingate to Jemmo, going through Regional Bus Station, Merkato and Kera.

This pioneering project is to be implemented by AACG, under the responsibility of the Addis Ababa Road and Transport Bureau (AARTB). The international procurement for engineering studies, support to Tenders and Works supervision was launched early February 2015 (gc) and this contract for consultancy services should start early August 2015. Civil works, as well as equipment supply, should be implemented starting mid-2016, for a commissioning provisional date in September 2017.

Thanks to this new financing, France trough the French Agency for Development (AFD) strengthens its technical and financial partnership with the Addis Ababa City Government (AACG). It is to be recalled that AFD is already the first development partner to AACG in terms of Solid Waste Management (SWM) and intends to expand this fruitful relationship to relocation and modernization project of the Addis Ababa Abattoirs Enterprise.
