To work towards a more sustainable transport situation in Addis Ababa, Kampala and Nairobi, UN-HABITAT will provide technical assistance and institutional support for the design and implementation of inter-related sustainable transport interventions in the three respective cities. This goal will be accomplished by facilitating the development and execution of four inter-related components in each of the three cities, as follows:

  • Component 1: Technical assistance and institutional support for the development of a comprehensive sustainable metropolitan transport system in Addis Ababa, Kampala and Nairobi
  • Component 2: Planning and detailed design for implementation of a demonstration sustainable transport corridor in Addis Ababa, Kampala and Nairobi, featuring bus rapid transit, non motorized transport and travel demand management measures.
  • Component 3: Feasibility of application of clean vehicles and fuel technology initiatives in Addis Ababa, Kampala and Nairobi
  • Component 4: Regional capacity building, awareness raising and networking

GIZ focuses on building a regional forum as a platform to exchange experience and ideas on SUSTRAN projects between the three cities. Regional activities include a study tour, regional workshops and training courses on sustainable urban transport for capacity building in each of the cities. The first regional workshops and trainings have been conducted late October and early November 2014 in Nairobi, Kampala and Addis Ababa. To complement the partner cities' work on BRT demonstration corridors, the trainings typically focus on the links between transport and urban development, transport oriented development, the development of Metropolitan Transport Authorities, public and informal transport as well as non-motorized transport. The trainings are intended to involve participants from ministries, the cities and transport operators, as well as other counterparts. Project partners and stakeholders are regularly updated on the project using newsletters and the project website.

Please also note that the first issue of the SUSTRAN newsletter was released and is available at The newsletter covers project updates and news from the cities as well as notifications on past and upcoming events.

The GEF SUSTRAN East Africa is a joint project being implemented in partnership with UN-Habitat and United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and financed by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF). The Project Management Units of the three partner cities will be supported by Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) and the Institute of Transport and Development Policy (ITDP)
